The Glass World of Miluše Roubíčková / 9.11. - 9.12.

Miluše Roubíčková is one of the pioneers of the liberation of glass from its current utilitarian function into a fully-fledged supporting material for a purely artistic message - free glass sculpture. She did not suffer from the frustration that everything had already been said and created, and apart from any theorizing and -isms, she based all her work on the typical properties of glass and the range of its differences and possibilities of craftsmanship, as she knew them not only from history and the common work of master glassmakers, but also from the products they used for fun after work. She created, as they did, for the sheer joy of the possibilities that glass offered, trying to apply and showcase old techniques while anyone still knew how, picking up ancient techniques from obscurity into the service and context of the contemporary or timeless, creating her own. With her feet firmly on the ground, she distributed her interest generously, unsentimentally and with humour, among other things, to the subjects of works that often, or entirely, escaped attention. It is to these works that this exhibition is dedicated. She wished artistic immortalisation to the inspiring shapes of fruit and vegetables, the things she was surrounded by, everyday objects, and the atmosphere of festive moments and small joys. She was at home in the ordinary, kind and smiling subjects of life that others dared not depict: shopping bags, mushrooms and cabbage heads, a dripping egg...

She became an inspiration for many, her glass has become "humanized" and her own original processes and shapes have been freely on the market for the last dozens of years in various successful variations and experiments by glassmakers and glass artists. This is especially true of the flooding of the market with glass flowers that have little in common with the original ones by Miluše Roubíčková. On the bright side, it is actually an appreciation that she went the right way.

Miluše Roubíčková (1922 - 2015), like her husband René Roubíček, is regarded as one of the leading figures of Czech and European art glassmaking. Between 1945 and 1949 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of glass and monumental drawing under Professor Josef Kaplický. She then devoted herself to industrial design, which she realized in prototypes often intended for mass production. She has been working freely in the spirit of Pop Art since the 1960s, exhibiting her works at many exhibitions at home and abroad, and is represented in a number of important collections focusing on glass.
